emulating film in 2024
Welcome to FilmVerse - The initial concept behind FilmVerse was to create a film emulation power grade that closely replicates the distinct qualities of Kodak's Vision3 film stocks, widely utilized in Hollywood productions. Our ambition extended beyond merely adding to the plethora of film looks available. The new objective is to go beyond film emulation into what makes film look desirable.
To realize this, we devised a pipeline to incorporate multiple layers of look adjustments. But that’s already possible in Resolve? What’s different? This pipeline uses a custom color space to allow non-destructive adjustments, thereby facilitating the creation of intricate and subtle looks. Moreover, it aims to transcend the conventional controls and the fundamental mathematics of Davinci Resolve, offering a pretty foolproof approach to color grading that is at par with current innovations in color science.

a color workflow that makes sense

[Re-upload] Colorists and film professionals prefer grading in “Scene referred” Color spaces. Because camera LOG and RAW were invented to capture stuff for more flexibility and dynamic range, camera color spaces or scene color spaces are designed to be bigger and wider. It naturally makes sense to manipulate the image in a bigger color space before the data is converted to a smaller one. Let’s ...

Do you have any color grading tutorials for this?
i how many computers can i use the license?
I'm a working colorist. No way have I EVER had this much time. There are a lot of repetitive, redundant and flat out wrong steps here (I suspect, designed to keep the viewer watching past the 8 minute monetization limit, and nothing more). It's a shame, because there are aspiring colorists watching these believing this is how it's done. 🙄
You are right, we are planning to abandon this content form. Planning to delete all videos that follow the old content philosophy
i have a question, when I play the video in Davinci Resolve the colors always changing and when I pause it, it comes back to the original with more saturation. Why is that?
We are facing similar issue on Resolve 19. It seems most (not all) of the OFX effects - if sandwiched between CST nodes are facing similar issues. DCTL plug-in is no different. On a different machine with DR 18, the issue never occurs. Similar reviews by peers and other users. Probably a DR beta bug, hopefully gets resolved with the final update. - V1.3 has transforms built in, this wont be an issue even if final Resolve update doesn’t fix this bug.
where can i get the colorist tool kit? it says the page doesn't exist

Hey guys! Quick question. If you shoot in LOG, do I have to convert to REC 709 first and then apply these luts?
No free plugin just a demo version that has a watermark... The thumbnail is kind of a clickbait then.
I really enjoy your color grading tutorials. You really make it easier to understand than a lot of other youtube channels. Question, what camera and model did you use for this footage?
nope.
Alright, okay, hehe 😅
This looks amazing!
All this, but the video was exported at 15fps...
so its not free, as the thumbsnail states? doesnt matter. the usual: flat color profile vs. grading + contrast.
Amazed by the complexity of this poor mans job. Is it possible to get all of these DCTL Plugins?
Go for color slice or look Dev tools, link in bio. As far as emulating the negative is concerned, I can share a negative only LUT over Instagram for you to play around with
The price is quite steep for a single look, considering there's no grain, halation, or other effects. Also, what's going on with the frame rate?
There is grain and halation, do try out the demo. And do go through the pdf. The idea is to use film as an initial point to stretch and create looks :)
who cares about this effect in movie theatres ??
People who truly love cinema, do :)
350$ for a DCTL ?? Man things are getting out of hand. Are you thinking of keeping it at that price now that Resolve announced their FilmCreatorLook tool ? I think that the people willing to spend 350$ on a DCTL are the same that will be completely fine with the results coming from the FPE tool supplied by DaVinci.
Yes. Our next video will be about recommending people to not buy our plug-in Infact. And I mean this - if you were out for something that Dehancer and other companies were doing already, this ain’t for you. As someone who hasn’t messed around enough I’m resolve, I’m sure won’t be able to fully utilise the plug-in. Film look is a subset of what we are trying to offer. It’s a trend - that’s already found its way to end of the saturation curve. We’re planning to release a free tool that uses DaVinci’s new tools to give a more film like accuracy. I think that will collapse the gap between people who want to create a film look, and people who want to do expand from film-look with a robust look Dev tool.
Also, hope you ran stuff on test charts before pointing this out :)
I haven’t played around with FilmCreatorLook yet but I have used the demo of filmverse (I’ll get it at some point just have other things I need the cash for at the moment) and it’s the closest I’ve seen to truly emulating film rather than the idea of it.
Hello, great plugin. Cant cant contact you via Instagram. Is it possible to receive a link w/o watermarks to try it out?
Yup, sending over Instagram :)
@@ColoristFoundry but as I said above, can t do over Instagram. Any other way possible?
That's not a free version of the plugin, that's a watermaked demo
I’m sharing the free non-watermarked version over DMs, feel free to drop by at @coloristfoundry

Where are you based off? I am trying to get stripe, government here is making it hard for vendors to use anything but Paypal. Everythin else has a cheap appeal to it in terms of UI. Sucks. Trying to fix it :(
For time being i'd love to share a non-watermark version for you to play around. Drop by on instagram
@@ColoristFoundry I HAVE SENT YOU MESSAGE BUT U HAVE NOT YET REPLY CHECK UR INBOX
How long does the demo last?
Watermarked one lasts forever, but incase you want to try it without watermark, DM us :) it lasts for short, but allows you to try out everything that we have built over good span of time - without watermark.
I got Dehancer and Look Designer and DeMystify’s Beyond Film Emulatoon and Monolabs Look Lab Print. I dont think this adds anything to that line up. Especially with Davinci Resolve 19 inbuilt density tools
I’d say, everything except dehancer is super recommended. But you are missing a point here. Getting film look is super easy - esp with resolve’s internal film filters now. It’s having good math to be able to stretch that look to a number of diverse project. Around here we only look upto - maybe - filmbox in that sense. Resolve’s new tools are good, but I wish the look Dev toolset was updated as well. Just like filmlight has been releasing some really good tools. That’s the experiment with this DCTL as well. Our behaviours are based on equations mimicking film like behaviour rather than 1:1 matching with film like responses. And the equations are coded into our custom color space. Film is a smaller part of our deal, and I am genuinely excited to put forth what we’ve been cooking on this side of earth through this plug-in.
Waiting for luts

Hello please could you answer in insta i wrote you sorry but please it’s important.
a little oversaturated for my taste
I would love to know your thoughts on what makes your plugin different than the others ? Specifically Dehancer. Thank you xx
A fair comparison is our plug-in and filmbox. What makes this different is what we are trying to chase here. I’m personally not a big fan of chasing a look, whatever that “look” might be. And problem with a lot of plug-in, and presets out there is that they aren’t kept keeping usability and intuition in mind. So when you start with Dehancer or say Resolves new film plug-in, you still have to pull a decent number of levers to attain the sweet spot. Our plug-in attempts to question, what if the sweet spot is just one of many possible look outcomes? And what if a better color model is indeed the answer we are looking for? I highly suggest you download a demo and test it out. It’s hard for me to distill everything in the comment, but I’m sure next update will put things in perspective. It’s expected to release by mid May, or earlier.
I would love to see this for FCPX

How does the Filmverse color science differ from Revolve 19's new Filmic Look Creator
Also wasn't it $249 last month? It's now $349! No offense, but DCTL's should probably be a lower price point to a certain extent because of Resolve 19's new features. I know it's still in beta, but come on.
